Dwelling Designs has put together brief descriptions of a few basic interior decorating styles. Each style has unique fundamental details that are highlighted to help determine what style may appeal to you.

Casual – simple details, textured fabrics and accessories, soft horizon lines, low-sheen surfaces, asymmetrical design, touches of whimsy as desired, mix of light and dark wood tones

Contemporary – uncluttered, light to medium wood tones, softer curved edges, leathers, textural fabrics, larger cushions, statement items

Eclectic – unexpected contrasts of style and texture, variety of design periods and mixing of eras, layering of diverse items, style focuses on color, pattern, shape, and composition

Folksy – charming, bordering on shabby chic or country, stylized or themed fabric patterns, painted items

Formal – typical in period homes/historic public spaces (i.e. White House), elaborate architecture, symmetrical design, highly polished dark wood tones, large mirrors, brass, crystal, smooth and lustrous fabrics, balanced patterns, antiques, oriental rugs, oil paintings, dressmaker touches on upholstery and pillows, layered window treatments with lots of fabric and trim, tight small cushions

Industrial Chic – contemporary urban style, modern and timeless, texturally and visually appealing, clean-lined, mixing of brick, stone, concrete, wood, metal, glass

Modern – clean/streamlined style from the 1920-1950’s, polished surfaces, strong geometric shapes and asymmetrical design, glass, metal, concrete, steel, lacquer

Shabby Chic – slip covers, flea market finds, cozy relaxed rooms, lived-in look, time-worn appeal, faded colors, soft comfortable fabrics, painted furniture

Traditional – gracious and inviting, 18th and 19th century styling, understated elegance, warm wood tones, tailored window treatments, patterned upholstery (tone-on-tone as well as multi-colored), oil paintings, crystal, silver and bronze

Whimsical – themed style, playful hand-painted murals on walls or furniture, somewhat ‘funky’, non-standard use for certain items, colorful, impulsive
